Soccer association closes in on land purchase

The Vigo County Youth Soccer Association might have the ball in the net and ready for play at a new location in fall 2007.

The VCYSA is closing in on a purchase of nearly 55 acres of land located at 990 W. Springhill Drive.

“We’re waiting for the subdivision ordinance to be passed. … We don’t see any opposition in that, so the land will be cleared for purchase of sale within 30 to 60 days,” said current land owner Ward M. Hubbard.

David Abrams, president of the VCYSA, said his group is on a “fast-tracked” planning process to develop the land.

Hubbard, the association’s land development committee chair, said crews are set to begin grading the area sometime next week. Weeding, planting grass seed and fertilizing will take place in August.

“So we could be mowing grass probably by the end of September,” Hubbard said.

Abrams said, “The earliest we see playing [at the new location] would be the fall of ‘07. That’s what we’re looking at, but again you have to wait to see what happens with all the rest of it.”

Last week, Vigo County Commissioners approved rezoning 56.65 acres out of a 140.6 acre tract, so the youth sport association can begin developing the land for season play.

Once the land is purchased, funding for development will become a top priority. Association officials anticipate needing to raise $200,000 for completion of the playing fields, concession facility and parking spaces.

The Vigo County Youth Soccer Association is currently operating at the Wabash Valley Fairgrounds, which has a limited amount of space for the soccer association’s programs, Abrams said.

The change of venue would increase the playing area from 17 acres to 46 acres.

“The main problem we are running into right now at the fairgrounds is that our program is continuing to grow and we’re running out of space,” Abrams said.

This fall season will mark the association’s 30th year, Abrams said.

Each spring about 1,300 soccer players register, with nearly 1,000 registered in the fall.

The association’s programs include eight age divisions, ranging from 4 to 19 years old. Children 9 and up can participate in a competitive travel league that is governed by the Indiana Youth Soccer Association.

The proposed new facility is exciting for parents and competitors alike, Abrams said.

“Now we just have to figure out how to do it, how to make it happen,” he said. “We just want to continue to allow the program to grow and get as many people as possible involved in the sport. It’s certainly growing in America. More and more people are interested. It’s really nice to see.”
