Youth soccer might have
new home
By Laura Followell

The Vigo
County Area Plan Commission approved rezoning 140 acres of agricultural land
Wednesday night, so the Vigo County Youth Soccer Association may play on it.
Terre Haute resident Ward Hubbard might sell 56.65 acres of his land to the
Soccer Association. Currently, the soccer program operates at the Wabash Valley
Fairgrounds.
“They’re purchasing land, because we need more fields,” said Jill Erickson,
first vice president of the Vigo County Youth Soccer Association he said. “We
don’t have enough room at the fairgrounds.”
The association was founded in 1977 with 100 registered players. In the 2006
spring season, 1,000 players registered, Erickson said.
The purchased land would allow the association the opportunity to increase its
membership, increase playing fields, allow for additional practice times and
allow travel teams to practice there.
Hubbard said with the purchase of land, the association would not be operating
on a limited amount of space, and kids would have a better playing surface.
Michael Aycock, director of coaching, said, “I think it’s a great step for us —
if we’re able to do it. It has grown quite a bit. We are overusing the grounds
that we have available.”
Commissioner Bill Bryan said, “I hate to see how much money that’s going to take
away from the fairgrounds.”
All the Plan Commission members present, including Bryan, voted to approve the
rezoning.
The County Council will decide the field’s zoning status in its Monday meeting.
The purchase of the land is contingent upon its rezoning from its current status
of A-1 agricultural district to an open-space district.
